Painting Wit's End

You may recall that in my last blog entry I was in the middle of moving from my old studio, into a new space. That move is complete and I am just getting down to working in the new space in earnest. Before I left my old space, I invited my buddy, videographer Jim Eaton to record the last painting painted in my old studio. Clients and collectors have been after me to create a video about my process and the stars aligned that Jim was available and I could take the time down the homestretch of a very busy move. Immediately after shooting this video, I packed up my paints, brushes and painting table and my studio of 23 years was empty for the new owners of our house. Onward and upward!

In Flux

This weekend I will move my studio of 23 years into a new transitional space. The kids have flown the coop and it is time to downsize. My wife and I will be moving into a rental house, while we look for a suitable place to purchase. I've had a wonderful run in this studio. It will be tough to say goodbye, but change is good and I look forward to the next phase. A big adventure! I have continued to work between packing and lugging boxes. Abstract Paintings - March/2016

Spring at Last

Having said this, we'll probably get a good dump of snow. But that's OK. The sun is getting higher and people (and animals) seem to have a little more spring in their step. It's been a good month in the studio and my new paintings seem to reflect the optimism of impending nice weather. Here is what transpired on the big wall of my studio this past month.

Accidents Will Happen - New Abstract Paintings - November / 2015

I've long been interested in the idea of the accident in art. Early in my career as a painter I was unenlightened  and had a tendency to overwork my paintings, obliterating every vestige of "accident", in a hopeless quest for perfection. But through the years I have come to embrace the unexpected and now let the materials speak. I try to work with the chaos rather than try to stifle it.  The process being much more of a dialogue rather than an imposition of one's will. Hopefully you can see evidence of this philosophy the this current batch of paintings.

“Pinto” Acrylic on Canvas, 24″ x 44″

 My work has had a long and steady evolution in the sketchbooks that I have been keeping for the last 40 years. I have a routine that I have been following for many years. I meditate for 20 minutes and follow that up with an hour session drawing in my books.

“Crackerjack” Acrylic on Canvas, 25″ x 44″

 The meditation clears my head and allows the good stuff to rise to the top. After meditating, my drawing is more relaxed and focused. I never know where these sessions will take me. The unexpected plays a big role in my present work.

 I have had a long career as a humorous illustrator. My work has appeared in many major magazines. Throughout my career, I have always continued to do my personal work.

“Array” Acrylic on Canvas, 17″ x 25″

 Several years ago I was fortunate enough to have a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. It changed my approach to my art. Prior to my VSC visit, I had been doing easel grid paintings on wood panel. The generous space of my VSC studio allowed me to start working on a larger scale, painting gesturally with my whole body, rather than just my wrist.

 Upon my return from my residency, I rearranged my studio so that I had a large wall to work on and have been working on a large scale ever since.

“Butterfingers” Acrylic on Canvas, 31.5″ x 52.5″

 These paintings are about the spontaneity of automatic drawing combined with the more cerebral act of editing. I try to let the materials do the work and react to what is presented to me, after an initial burst of unfiltered mark making.

“Zydeco” Acrylic on Canvas, 30″ x 38″

 In some ways, my work reflects the chaos and rhythms of nature and everyday life and how chaos can unexpectedly veer towards beauty. I find this way of working deeply satisfying. I am always looking forward to what the next painting will reveal.

“Lumina” Acrylic on Canvas, 22.5″ x 53″

 I have been actively marketing this work for the last several years. I spend most mornings to that end. The afternoons are for painting.

“Ravenna” Acrylic on Canvas, 30″ x 41″

 My work is in many online galleries and I have been seeking representation in quality galleries. I have also been marketing my work to art consultants with an eye on the hospitality, corporate, and healthcare markets.

	About Hal Mayforth Hal Mayforth is an American Illustrator and Painter. He was born and raised in Vermont, and attended Skidmore College in NY where he graduated with a Fine Art degree.
